TOURING GUIDE
Tourist Information
If you ask they may send you a very useful little booklet, Itinerari nella Toscana del Giubileo which includes Florence. This is a comprehensive guide to Tuscany's vast legacy of religious art in churches and museums, many of them in the countryside. It is well-mapped with illustrations of frescoes, paintings, sculptures and ceramic reliefs. It is a recent publication and there is a good chance that it contains valid dates, times of opening, and lines of communication. You might find it interesting to research Assisi, Chianti, Cortona, Florence, San Gimigniano, Gubbio, Montalcino, San Marino, Orvieto, Perugia, Pienza, Poppi, Urbino, or Volterra to prepare for your holiday - the list is endless. If you plan a circular route don't forget the mountains roads are slow and try to return home on a superstrada . A comfortable air-conditioned car is recommended for touring especially if you have children. Feasts, concerts, entertainments and pageants take place all over Italy in the summer. There are beautiful costumes and dazzling parades. Most famous is Il Palio, the spectacular horse race held on the Campo di Siena in Siena every 2nd July and 16th August, but Arezzo and Sansepolcro have their own competitions for prowess in jousting and archery. Even Caprese Michelangelo has a chestnut festival on the castle mount on the 3rd and 4th weekend of October. There are also a number of cycle races on the winding roads and in June the Lamborghini Veteran Car Race takes place on its circuit round the Alpe della Luna. It can be difficult to obtain programmes of summer events much in advance but try
In the meantime I shall be trying them. If you have any problems contact me in case I have had better luck.
Day Planning Do not forget how tiring it can be going from place to place, whether shopping or just taking in the sights.Make sure you see what you want to see and do not try to fit in too much when setting your itinerary. Eating in a pleasant trattoria breaks up the day beautifully and provides relief from the mid-day sun. You can then spend the evening without the need for more driving, relaxing al fresco with a simple supper and a glass or two of wine. Sight-seeing can be alternated with days of lazing on the terraces, cycling ( bike hire nearby) walking the hill trails, visiting Caprese Castle or La Verna Sanctuary or just enjoying the social interchange in the noisy markets. You may like to visit Sansepolcro's lovely swimming pool set in an arboretum, go horse-riding, play golf, tennis or fish - if a permit is obtained.
