Simonicchi

Experience the enchantment ... of the countryside celebrated in the paintings of Piero della Francesca; the flower-strewn hills of Tuscany that lend Florence its name. Follow the Piero della Francesca Trail from his birthplace at nearby Sansepolcro to Monterchi, Arezzo, Florence, Rimini and the Ducal Palace at Urbino. Combine Art, Nature, breathtaking panoramas, the intense spirit of place, with delicious regional food and wine from the Chianti vineyards, and you have a feast for both body and soul.

My house in the hamlet of Simonicchi, in an idyllic setting, offers an escape from the pressures of modern life.  It makes an ideal base for day trips to famous cultural and historic centres, for exploring the medieval walled towns of the area (eg. Cortona of 'Under the Tuscan Sun' fame ), or just for enjoying the Italian way of life. In the rural heart of Central Italy the cities of Florence, Siena and Arezzo are within easy reach, and from nearby Pieve Santo Stefano the motorway to Rome leads to Le Marche, Umbria and the ancient Etruscan hill towns, giving limitless possibilities for touring.

Simonicchi looks eastwards to the hilltop birthplace of sculptor Michelangelo and is close to St. Francis' refuge,  the  Sanctuary of La Verna, which is set on the edge of the beautiful and dramatic mountain basin the Casentino National Park. The tradition of caring for travellers passing through the  mountains has given rise to Caprese's  numerous family restaurants regularly visited  nowadays by Florentines and Romans.

Beneath the archway, seen in the top photograph ,which links the entrance road to the old mule track, lie cottage gardens and terraces planted with fruit trees, lavender and olives. Looking across the valley to the chestnut forests, they provide a relaxing place to sunbathe, watch the stars and dine al fresco.

The roof terrace is totally private with a wide panorama of the night sky, and is directly beneath the Milky Way. It is a wonderful place to sunbathe and stargaze. Amateur astronomers are welcome to use our reflector telescope. Without a swimming pool, untroubled by noise, air or light pollution, it is truly peaceful.
